The torsion test setup consists of four main components: the loading apparatus, moment measurement unit, amplifier, and calibration unit. The loading (twisting) apparatus is fixed on the bench slides, while the moment measurement and calibration units are designed to be movable along the bench slides to be mounted at the desired position. The apparatus includes a gearbox, a drum, a handwheel, a handwheel angle scale, a torsion angle scale, and an electronic counter that displays the number of revolutions of the handwheel.

In all real vibrating systems, after the external force causing the vibration is removed, the vibrations gradually weaken and eventually disappear completely. This is due to certain effects in the systems that absorb mechanical energy. These effects, known as damping, vary widely but share the common characteristic of generating forces called damping forces that oppose the system's velocity. A particularly important type of damping is viscous damping.

The impact test is performed to gain insights into the mechanical properties of metallic materials, especially under conditions prone to brittle fracture. The mechanical properties of metals are mostly determined using tensile test results. From the stress-strain diagram obtained through the tensile test, information about a material's ductility can be inferred. A metal that shows good elongation is expected to be ductile, meaning it will resist fracture under static and dynamic loading. This prediction generally holds true for metals with face-centered cubic or hexagonal crystal systems (most non-ferrous metals and austenitic stainless steel). However, in metals with a body-centered cubic crystal system, discrepancies can sometimes be observed between tensile and impact test results. A material that behaves ductile in the tensile test may exhibit brittle behavior in the notched impact test. This phenomenon is especially common at temperatures below room temperature.
